It’s week 1 of Fall 2023 One Room Challenge! As an ORC veteran, I have completed three room makeovers, including this moody home office, the master bedroom, and my daughter’s big girl room. This time I am working on a tricky space of our home: the office/music room/playroom/guest bedroom, a.k.a. multipurpose “everything” room.

This space measures 11’x12’, and is right by the main entrance. Because of how tight this space is, only a sleeper sofa and a digital piano can fit in. We want to be able to host families and friends if they come over to stay with us for a few days, at the same time make it work for our everyday needs (instead of an empty room behind closed doors).

There is one key element that is missing in this room: storage. Blank walls are all you see when you first in. Back when I explored ideas for a multipurpose room, I saw many designs with a Murphy bed or a day bed. I liked these ideas, but ultimately landed on a sofa that can fold down as a full-size bed. A sofa looks pretty alone, is not too bulky. And the mattress of this Room and Board sofa is so comfortable that it feels even better than what we use in the master bedroom.

To complete this space, I am going to add floor to ceiling built-ins on both sides and above of the sofa, shelving for art and books, and decorations that soften the overall look and feel. The built-ins are going to be the most heavy-lifting component of this entire project, but it will bring this room to the next level.

Plan of action:
- DIY built-in closet
- Custom drawer and closet fronts
- Accent wall
- Faux marble round table
- New lighting, rug, curtains, and art
Lots of upgrades while keeping the budget as reasonable as possible by using IKEA hacks, DIY ideas and existing furniture.

In the next 8 weeks, I will share updates with you in Instagram stories and here. Stay tuned for more One Room Challenge footage and progress! I am excited to turn this boring, compact room into a beautiful space packed with surprises and functions.
