When we first moved into our newly built house, I spent the first few years in “survival mode”—dragging hoses around the yard just to keep the grass alive. Now that the lawn has finally established, I can turn my attention to other unresolved issues. That’s where our DIY yard drainage project came in.

What used to be a soggy, unsightly problem area has since been transformed into a charming gravel path (I’ll share more about that in a separate post). In this article, though, I want to focus on one of the yard drainage problems you may face: setting up a simple, effective sump pump discharge line—without the hassle of renting heavy equipment or spending thousands of dollars.

What Caused the Water Issue in Our Side Yard
Like many homes in the Midwest, ours has a basement—an underground concrete foundation that supports the house and doubles as a living space. Because water always seeks low spot, basements are naturally prone to water buildup, especially after a heavy rain or when the snow melts too quickly. A wet basement is not fun to deal with.
Older houses usually depend on good yard grading (a proper slope away from the foundation) to keep water at bay. Newer homes, like ours, come with a sump pump. It’s a machine that collects groundwater through a drain tile system and pumps it outside.

The problem? Our sump pump’s discharge pipe stuck out only about three inches past the house. Which meant it was dumping all that water right back against the wall it was supposed to protect.

As a quick fix, my husband duct-taped a ten-foot flexible hose (or drain pipe) to the outlet so the water could flow further away. It worked—sort of. With the sheer volume of water gushing out, the wet spot quickly turned into a soggy patch of mud covered in moss. All of the excess water pools in the sunken areas, creating a big mess.
How We Built an Easy Sump Pump Discharge Line
This summer, I finally said, “enough is enough.” That muddy, messy side yard had to go. Before I could create the stone path I’d been dreaming of, the sump pump hose needed to go underground. That way, the water could quietly disperse into the soil—and we could enjoy a cleaner, prettier yard without tripping over ugly pipes. Win-win.

After a bit of research, we sketched out a simple plan:
- Start with a freeze guard.
- Run a 10-foot discharge line down the slope.
- End with a pop-up drainage emitter to release the water.


The first step was digging. We dug a trench about a foot deep, laid in some gravel for drainage, and started building the line. Because the soil was already damp from recent rain, the digging part went faster than expected.

From there, it was like putting together a giant PVC puzzle. Our sump pump pipe was 1½ inches wide, so we started with a 1½” 90° street elbow. That connected to a freeze guard (which doubled as an adapter to the larger pipe size). Then came a 4″ sweep elbow, straight 4″ PVC pipe, a 45° elbow, another length of pipe, and finally a coupling that connected everything to the pop-up emitter.

The real secret to making a drainage line work is planning the path ahead of time and keeping a steady downward slope so gravity does the hard work of carrying water away. Instead of letting water find its path of least resistance on ground level. We created a better landscape design that ensured better drainage.
Once the layout was set, we secured each joint with two-part PVC glue and pressed the pipes together tightly. (Pro tip: this is way easier with two people—one to hold the pipe steady, the other to twist and lock it in.)
Will the Pipe Freeze in Winter?
One of the first questions people asked when they saw our DIY yard drainage idea was: “Won’t the pipes freeze solid once winter hits?”
The short answer: not likely. Here’s why this setup is designed to keep water moving and prevent freezing:
Freeze Guard = built-in safety valve.

The freeze guard has an open design that lets water escape vertically if the downstream pipe is ever blocked. That means water won’t sit trapped in the line—it always has somewhere to go.
A steady downhill slope.
The entire drainage line follows the natural grade of our yard with a continuous downward pitch. Water flows out quickly instead of hanging around inside the pipe.
Multiple exit points.

Most of the water comes out through the pop-up emitter at the end of the line. Whatever little bit remains seeps out through a weep hole at the bottom, draining into the gravel base.
In other words: as long as water doesn’t sit still, it won’t have the chance to freeze solid.
A Viral Reel That Sparked an Invention
This little diy project fixed a big problem for us, and we couldn’t wait to share the results online. To our surprise, the video took off—people loved the idea, and before long the reel went viral.
But with all that attention came plenty of questions, especially about one detail: Why put the pop-up emitter right next to the paver walkway (a.k.a. the retaining wall)?

Our thinking at the time was simple: direct the water away from the walking path and let the overflow soak into our plants. But as it turns out—too much water in one spot can wash away surrounding soil, which eventually weakens the wall. Not exactly the outcome we wanted.
I first tried a quick fix by placing a splash pad next to the emitter, hoping it would guide water over the wall instead. It did not work.
My husband saw what I was struggling with, fired up his computer, and designed a small gadget to 3D print. A couple of hours later, we had a brand-new invention: a 3D-printed pop-up emitter adapter.

It’s a simple ring that fits snugly around the emitter. When water gushes out, the adapter channels it neatly onto the splash pad, carrying it away from the wall. No more erosion, pools of water, just a clean, functional solution.

We’re by no means yard drainage experts. Before choosing this DIY drainage solutions, we read about different ideas. From dry creek bed to catch basin, dry wells, rain garden, to complex yard drainage system that involves a 20-feet-long perforated pipe. Every situation is a little different. What worked for us might not be the perfect solution for you. Still, we hope sharing our experience gives you some inspiration to take on your own drainage issues.
Remember— not every water problem calls for a full-blown French drain system. Sometimes a simple, creative fix can make a big difference.

Really need your pop up emitter adapter for newly installed pop-up sump pump ejector to move water away from home. Original sump pump pipe ran directly underground to back of yard & drainage ditch. Water now clogged by many, many roots of full-grown trees. This new emitter is solving that problem but your adapter will help to distribute the water away from the adapter to avoid erosion right next to the emitter.
